Mama Africa at Tribeca

A Germany, South Africa, Finland documentary co-production, Mama Africa, about the late, legendary South African singer and civil rights activist Miriam Makeba, is one of eight films from around the world selected for the CinemaMania section of the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Directed by Mika Kaurismäki, Mama Africa was written by Kaurismäki and South African Don Edkins, who is known as the executive producer of STEPS for the Future and the Why Democracy's series.

Mama Africa was Miriam Makeba’s nickname. The film is packed with five decades of rare archival footage and captivating melodies. First introduced to American audiences by Harry Belafonte, Makeba’s songs exposed the injustice of Apartheid in South Africa to the world—resulting in a 30-year exile from her home country. Throughout her life, Makeba inspired millions through her powerful songs of joy, love, and revolution. In English, French with English subtitles.

The Tribeca Film Festival runs from 20 April to 1 May.
